Where to stay in Venice - Treviso, Italy

I read about Treviso in the 'Family Guide - Italy' by DK Eyewitness Travel. This beautiful little town, is located in the Veneto region of northern Italy. With only 30 mins (30km) away by train, makes it an ideal location for your Venice trip.

With lot's of waterways and little bridges, it is called 'Little Venice'. There is a local market, abundance of gelaterias and chic boutiques all around the town. Treviso is also known as the city of art and water, home to the Benetton brand and the birthplace of the Italian desert TiramisΓΉ.

There is not much going on in the town center in the middle of a hot summer day, so the best thing to do is to wander around this charming little place admiring its beautiful architecture; and if you love art and history this is a fantastic city to explore. Treviso comes to life in the early evening though, with local restaurants opening up and people meeting for dinner.

There seems to be everything you may need during your stopover. We bought a Mac charger in an Apple shop, which we lost somewhere along the way, and a universal battery charger in a local photo shop for our old video camera, which worked just fine.

Our accommodation, a 2 bedroom modern apartment, booked at My Place Piazza Vittoria Apartments via booking.com, was right in the town center, next door to the organic supermarket NaturaSΓ¬. It turned out to be a heaven for us and the kids. There was a wonderful choice of fresh fruits and vegetables, whilst breads, cakes and quiches were made right there on the spot. The home and beauty sections had a fantastic choice of organic products for the whole family.

Our apartment, at 15 Viale Cadorna, was large, comfortable, air conditioned and centrally located. It was about 10 minutes (650 meters) walk from the train station.

Next day in the morning, we took a train for a day trip to Venice..

Practical info:

• We arrived in Treviso from Milano Centrale. The quickest journey is around 2:50h with a quick change in Venezia Mestre.
• If you are fussy about what you eat on your trip to Venice (like me ;)), be sure to pack up a nice little lunch well in advance. NaturaSΓ¬ (mentioned above), has everything you may need.
• The train to Venice, costs less then 5 eur per person (one way) and runs frequently, just board it at Treviso Centrale for Venezia Santa Lucia. As there are many options available, your best bet is to choose the quickest 30 min journey with no stops. Buy your return ticket in Treviso to avoid long queues in Venezia.
