Our overnight stop in Udine, Italy

Our journey to Poland by train continued.. We travelled with children and got off every 2.5 hours or so.. with the idea of a few hour break, or to stay for a few days to discover new, beautiful Mediterranean towns.

Before we left for Vienna, our last stop in Italy was Treviso, an excellent location for visiting Venice, I can't recommend it enough. From Vienna we continued all the way up through the Czech Republic, to Kraków in Poland and we did the same on the way back. Udine was our first stop back in Italy.

We got off the train station, a bit disappointed by the area. We walked to our hotel, thinking it was only for one night so let's just focus on the positives... and then, believe it or not, with every step we took, it started to get better and better. We checked in to our hotel Ambassador Palace and were pleasantly surprised by the nice ambience. The hotel was completely renovated in 2002. Our room was quite large, with character furniture and an en-suite bathroom.

Once we left our luggage, we went for a stroll to see what else Udine had to offer. As always in Italy, you have an abundance of gelaterias, where ice-cream tastes like nowhere else. So this is what we began with. With our moods instantly lifted, Udine started to show it's charm.

Every little street, shows Udine's character and history. An old Hungarian legend says, that a hill was built there, with soldiers instructed to bring soil in their helmets and shields..

We reached Piazza San Giacomo, the main square, where the line of cafes and restaurants started to fill up with people of all ages. As with most Mediterranean towns the life revolves around the main square. This is where people meet and dine, this is where you always end up during your passeggiata. The atmosphere is always very pleasant and you can find some lovely restaurants, so try to make time for it during your travels.

With pizzas and pastas in abundance we wanted to get some soup for the kids. This proved to be a very difficult task, but what a surprise it was when we found it back in our own hotel's restaurant.

The next day, right after breakfast, during which some funny Italian waiters craved a little mouse out of an orange, we took the train to Milan.

Arrivederci Italia. 🇮🇹

Our journey continued by train through France and then Costa Blanca in Spain.

Until next time, when I see you in Nice. 🇫🇷

Valuable info:

  • Udine is accessible by train linking Venice, Treviso and Tireste to name a few.
  • Venice is close by, so it may be worth considering it on your journey.
  • If travelling with kids in the summer, be sure to have some mosquito repellents or buy in one of the local pharmacies.
