Just like in the neighbouring Mediterranean countries, the people of Portugal love their weekly market. During the two years of living in Portugal, we visited the buzzing market held in the centre of Esposende each Saturday.
Here, you would always find fresh fruits, vegetables and flowers all grown locally and the fish would be caught in the ocean not far from the coast. We would always go straight to Lola's stand. Her organic certified produce was everything we needed in terms of fruits and vegetables, and if we needed things like buckwheat, quinoa, nuts, seeds and more.., we would order them from the little bio supermarket/restaurant Biocelos.
I loved coming back home with our baskets full and cook with all the seasonal produce straight from the farm. On many occasions, when I was unable to get the the market with small children, wonderful Lola and her sister would deliver 'the market' to me.
Lola's father started the farm with great passion and now Lola with the help from her family continues to run it. She specialises in vegetables, fruits, jams and tomato pulp, all certified organic.
Before we moved to Portugal, I had done my research in terms of food. I looked for organic producers and although I had found some near Barcelos, I struggled to find any near Esposende. That was, until I saw Lola preparing some preserves and arranging meals with edible flowers on her Facebook page. I knew, right away we were going to be in good hands.
Thank you Lola for feeding my family, during our two-year stay in Portugal, our meals wouldn't be the same without you. :)
